The Pasquali, a charming folk event with a religious background.
This tradition, unique in its kind, has its roots in the pastoral and rural culture of the Alta Valtellina and originates from ancient pagan rites linked to pastoralism and mountain agriculture, later transformed into traditional and religious rites by Christianity.
Once the Easter tradition found its expression in the simple blessings of five lambs, magnificently adorned by each of the five historic districts in which the village is divided: Maggiore, Dossiglio, Buglio, Combo and Dossorovina. The five departments competed in the best way to dress a lamb with ribbons and bows and led him to receive the blessing in the main square of the village. Later the tradition became a real competition among the departments, with the creation of works of art with an allegorical-religious background, the preparation of which requires long months of work and begins with the choice of the "meaning of the Easter" that is, with the identification of what the message with a religious background is intended to represent.
The work for the realization of the Pasquali is impressive and involves many people organized into teams, which make elaborate allegorical floats in the form of sedans ("stretchers") with artistic subjects, in which context are reproduced historical buildings and sacred places of the country or is done reference to problems and issues related to daily life and religious news. These sedans - it is since 1932 that the Pasquali take on the presentation that we know today - are carried on the shoulders by the "Pasqualisti" in a suggestive parade along the streets of Bormio, to which they take part, all in typical costume, also women, elderly, children and animals dressed up to the nines.
The parade ends in Piazza del Kuerc, in front of the collegiate church of the SS. Gervasio and Protasio to receive the archpriestal blessing. Here the Pasquali are exposed all day to be admired by those who participate in the event and to be appreciated and evaluated by a specially appointed jury, which decrees the winners and assigns the various prizes to be won based on various factors, from religious significance to work artisanal and artistic, without forgetting the cultural and traditional aspect, the fulcrum of the event itself.
